Between September 2008 and September 2010 I was the Head of Office of the Gender Unit of the UN Peacekeeping Operations in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. I assisted with design and implementation of a mission-wide action plan to translate existing policies and mandates on the promotion of gender equality in all activities of the peacekeeping mission, and facilitated the implementation of the plan, providing ongoing technical advice to Gender Focal Points, to build and expand capacity for gender analysis and the design of gender-sensitive policies and programs.
I developed and maintained relations and partnerships with high-level and senior government officials, as well as multilateral and bilateral agencies and NGOs. Participated in making substantive contributions to the work of established inter-agency coordination mechanisms for gender mainstreaming and to partnership efforts with UN agencies. Ensured liaison and partnerships with CSOs and women’s groups and ensured that all information and outreach activities of the mission reach and involve women, as well as men.
I was also responsible for all gender-related reporting, documentation of good practices. I prepared policy papers and related submissions for senior mission leaders and DPKO personnel, represented DPKO in inter-governmental forums, public information/relations events and key meetings, participated in policy dialogue; discussed policy initiatives, reported on progress achieved and/or present policy papers/ideas.
I served as member of the UN Country Team (UNCT) under the strategic guidance and coordination of the UN Resident Coordinator (RC)/Humanitarian Coordinator (HC) and supported UNCT programming and advocacy to ensure gender equality and women’s empowerment issues are fully integrated into UN programming processes, including the Common Country Assessment (CCA) and United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF).
